Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but I made a wallpaper which you can see below and was unhappy that the text couldn't be read. I just happened to try setting "Perspective Zoom" to off and low and behold, the text colour changed and the grey shadow appeared!
Perfect!

Perfect!

Apple talked about this during WWDC. It's not the perspective Zoom that controls this it's the position of the wallpaper.

Do you know what the specifics are?

From personal experience if you move the wallpaper around to specific spots it will turn the text from white to black and vice versa. Jony Ive mentioned this but I'm trying to locate any material for you to look at. It had to with the whole color scheme and transparency effects with iOS 7.

if the part of the wallpaper behind the type is too dark, type turns white. If it's too bright, type goes black.

Off topic, but I just love the pic. One of our cats lays like that when she wants her paws rubbed.

OP, speaking of and also appreciating your lovely kitty, are you receptive to posting the photo as a wallpaper that others could enjoy using? Understandable, of course, if you say no. :)

No problem. He'd be honoured to know his photo was being used by other admirers I'm sure

I HATE the way iOS 8 adds a grey shadow at the top when it feels it is appropriate. I wish the feature could be turned off.
