Hi all, I know tablet PCs are dumb and stupid, but check this out:

Several scientific studies have shown that reading in portrait-mode, 8.5 x 11-inch format, increases reading speed, comprehension and retention.

Interesting concept I must say.:)

From the manufacture press release (Dated 11-12-02):
"It is becoming increasingly clear that the desktop PC as we know it, is dead,"..."As the marketplace scrambles to find new ground we have see several large PC makers adopting the tablet PC. The initial response to the slate concept, however, has left consumers wanting, leaving the market convinced that the tablet is not the next form factor of choice. In response, Estari is replacing the office desktop PC with the 2-VU(TM), dual-screen mobile laptop."
...
"Estari Inc. is on schedule to deliver the 2-VU(TM), its patented dual-screen mobile laptop computer, to selected vertical markets in early 2003"..."Unlike tablet PCs, the 2-VU(TM) has two full-sized (13.3- or 15-inch diagonal), full color touch screens."
...
"The 2-VU(TM) uses a Microsoft Windows(R) XP or 2000 operating system and FileScout(TM), Estari's digital document management software package, which will organize and manage information in virtually any file format--wherever the information is located. Customers will soon be able to order 2-VUs from Estari's websites: www.dualscreen.com, www.estari.com, or through selected resellers."

From the specs sheet:
  • Pentium-III Ultra Low Voltage processor 800 MHz or higher
  • Up to eight hours of battery life (battery in second bay)
  • Dual XGA (1024x768) 13.3 or 15" touch screens
  • Input from stylus, standard or wireless keyboard/mouse, or onboard keyboard
  • Up to 1 GB RAM, up to 60 GB HD
  • Internal Combo Drive
  • Two Mini PCI Type III Slot for internal wireless/bluetooth/other
  • Smart Card and Compact Flash Memory Card Reader
  • PC Card slot, type I/II
  • 3 USB ports, 1 Firewire 400 port
  • RJ-11, RJ-45 ports (modem and ethernet)
  • Stereo speakers, headphone jack, line-in, microphone

This is a very pricey computer, but the 13.3" model looks really appealing :p All I can say is, this is a cool concept.

But he says the company plans to produce a consumer version late next summer that will feature less expensive 10-inch screens. "They'll be a little more attractive in terms of price for consumers," he says.

What do ya'll think?

Built in wireless would be nice as well. But even though its nice, what would you use it for?

Load eNovel and have the pages flip for you on your way to work on the Metro? Applications in general are limited and anyone who thinks touch screen is going to bring about the death of the desktop machine is on drugs. Got to love the way the marketing 'gurus' for the product try and sell it. It would never be practical as a workstation.

...in TV shows

Hmm...

The 2-VU has recently been featured on several high-profile TV shows, including "Crossing Jordan."

When producers of the show "24" found out that we made a smaller unit, they sent their 15-inch diagonal model back to exchange it for a 13.3-inch production model, which they are planning to introduce mid-season, as the means for the actor who is portraying the U.S. President to receive his briefings.
