My 5 year old daughter does tend to punish the keys on my wife's 2013 11 inch MBA when things don't go her way and now we seem to have a problem with the backlight on the keyboard. It comes and goes as it pleases even with auto dimming switched off. Is this likely to be the cause or unrelated? I am not sure how the backlight works from an engineering perspective.

The backlight is attached to the back of the keyboard. It's possible that excessive pressure has caused a minor break in the power circuit that runs along the backlight. The light working and not working may happen due to changes in temperature or pressure to cause momentary contact and allow the backlight to work.

The backlight can be changed without changing the keyboard.
