Internal drive sleeping if using external SSD?

I want to use an external SSD on my next iMac, mostly for ease of replacing.

I'm really tired of hearing the internal harddrive's random reads while in Windows 7.

Could someone with an external boot drive confirm if the internal HDD stays completely silent (if not accessed for long periods)?
