Would an internal keyboard from a Early 2011 MacBook Pro work in a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro? The pins on the ribbon connector seem to be the same but a tiny bit thinner.

I've installed a 2011 keyboard in my Mid-2010 MacBook and it doesn't appear to work - (no caps lock key, none of the keys work and no power button). If they're incompatible then I just gotta buy a new keyboard. If they are compatible then the keyboard controller is dead.

On an unrelated note - can you kill the keyboard controller by shorting out all the keyboard pins? If so, that's probably what happened.
