I play Starcraft 2 with my friends so I use the internal mic frequently when playing and I also use up the headphones slot so there is no feedback into the phone (so I'm not going to get an additional mic).
I don't quite remember which one of the following I did when playing but soon after I did that, the mic stopped working. I have a secondary monitor set up. I don't remember if I just (1) played with it on (it turned black and the game appears on my laptop's screen) or (2) I played with it on and I pulled out the monitor cord while I was playing because I thought it was stupid to just have that black screen on for no reason.
Either way I did one of those things and then the mic stopped working. In the game I would do a mic test and it would work and my friends could hear me. After I closed the menu screen, they could hear me for like 10 seconds then it'd stop working (btw I could tell it stopped working becuase they don't use headphones and I can hear feedback/my voice).
I then checked system preferences audio. There I made sure the output and input were correct, that any relevant boxes were checked/unchecked and I tested it. The wierd thing is that the bar fluctuates meaning that it is picking up my voice but it doesn't output at all.
I also tried using Dragon Dictate and that worked fine so I know the inputting part is working fine. I also tried someone's shady Flash mic checker but that didn't show any bars suggesting it was not picking something up (despite SC2 and System Prefs showing input).
I've tried deleting the library files in preferences->audio. I've also tried resetting SMC and PRAM. Yes, it's not muted, blah blah. I tried someone's BS fix of flicking the plastic bit where the microphone is but that also didn't work.
Any other ideas?
