So I'll be going to Guam soon, so questions as follows:

1. I do NOT want to be able to use the phone features, so other than airplane mode, can I get AT&T to suspend my account?

2. I want to be able to: access Wi-Fi and, if possible, utilize GPS features (w/o downgrading to cell tower triagulation [which would = $$$])

Please advise

Good luck! I was just in Canada and used roaming data and I got whacked $89 for 5.86MB of data. That was basically checking my email 2x and looking up 2 or 3 websites. You should see if they offer an international plan and go for that so you are paying a bit more but not paying for roaming.

next time you should purchase an international data roaming package for a month. ATT has a 20MB package for $25 or a 50 MB package for $59. I was gone for the past month and it was well worth getting the package! you need to make sure youre in a qualifying country tho (http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/dataconnect-global.jsp) and on the qualifying network.

as for the original post, I know with 2.0 you can turn on airplane mode (turning off all cell signals) and then go back in and turn on wifi by itself.

I guess you could have ATT suspend your line of service, but you wont be getting a reduced bill in this situation.

First of all you cannot use the GPS features without using data on the iphone 3g period. No way around this until a new App is developed and approved by Apple. So what you are asking with GPS usage on the iphone 3g is not possible at this time.

With the new 2.0 software, you can enable Wi-Fi even in Airplane mode.

So Apple has made it pretty easy to avoid data charges while roaming. The easiest way to avoid data charges is just take out the SIM card out of the iphone 3g and use the wifi/ipod functions.

People want their cake and eat it too. So until Tomtom/garmin releases a software based (not data dependent), you cannot use GPS without incurring data charges if roaming. Basically the software is out there and I think TomTom has been working on it but Apple wants too much money from their App Store to make it profitable at this time for TomTom to sell.

Hate to break to to you, but you are not traveling internationally. You are traveling domestically.

I don't know what the rates are for Puerto Rico and Guam, but if I remember correctly it isn't as bad as roaming in Europe or asia for example.

But if you are worried, set "Data Roaming" to off. Then the phone will not use any data. Call AT&T to enable International Roaming & International calling if you wish to be able to make or receive calls while traveling internationally. But again, since you are in the US you may not need to.
