internet connect authentication problem

Hello Everyone. I have an iMac CRT running OS X 10.3.9 and connect to the internet (braodband) using a USB thomson speedtouch 330. If I click the little telephone icon in the top right hand corner of the screen nine times out of ten I just ask it connect from the drop down menu and it connects up no problem but sometimes it appears to connect up (clock is running on connect time) but my entourage email can't connect to the server and my safari can't find the server. If I disconnect and connect again (sometimes it takes a couple of go's) everything works fine. I checked the box in the PPP options to 'connect automatically when needed' yesterday and have found that it never works using automatic connection it always says authentication failed. There must be something wrong somewhere but I can't find it. All my internet setting must be good or it wouldn't connect at all . Any ideas?
