I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on a Macbook Pro, and today I've been unable to connect to the internet via ethernet or wi-fi, unless I'm in safe mode. Then everything seems to work as it should, which makes me believe that this is a software issue rather than a hardware problem. I've tried making a new account with administrator priveleges, but that doesn't solve my issue. Does anyone have any advice on how I can connect to the internet under my normal user account, rather than in safe mode? I should note that I won't be able to get my hands on my repair CD or perform a clean install of OSX because that stuff is at home, and I'm in college. Also, I'm at a university and don't have a router. I just use the campus-wide wi-fi. Finally, my roommate has no problem accessing the internet in our room via ethernet or wi-fi, but I do. Thanks for the help everyone.

Safe mode for the OS. I've tried Firefox, Safari and Chrome. Any ideas?

Based on what is disabled in safe mode, I'd take a look at your startup items. You can see this from System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. See if there is anything you don't recognize, and even try disabling all of them and seeing if you can access the internet with a regular boot up.

You can also try repairing permissions from Disk Utility. Something else to look at is Console (/Applications/Utilities/Console) and see if there are messages that appear when you open your browser and try to access a site. There will be other messages so try to take note of new ones when you're firing up the browser.

Thank You, AngelWatt

I was having the same problem as donfolds, but disabling Login Items seems to have done fixed the problem for me! Thank you.

I suppose I didn't check immediately after switching back from safe mode, or after deleting internet accounts I didn't ask for my system to remember... so it could have had something to do with those... but it definitely worked after I then removed all Login Items under Users & Groups and restarted my computer (again).

Your posts have prompted my return to internet capability; thank you.
