When a video is embedded in a webpage (say at youtube.com or something), is there anything I can do to keep the video from stopping whenever the tab playing the video is not at the front?

I would imagine that this has to do with Safari's handling of web pages and tabbing preferences. Maybe try using FireFox or Opera or Shiira. Seems like they maybe more optimizeable (not a real word), to allow you to continue playing videos in non "opened" tabs.
Just a guess, have no real idea

I think your correct...its just the way safari handles its resources. Firefox works fine for this.
