I have a 2.5 hour interview at a local Apple Store. The store is hiring Specialists, Creatives, and Managers. What can I expect from this 2.5 hour interview? Thank you for your help!

2.5 hours?

Mine lasted about 30-45min and got hired the next day...

What apple products do you own? What are you looking forward to?

Know all the services Apple offers. Etc... Just study the website. lol

2.5 hours?

The manager of the Apple store where the interview will be said for me to expect to be there for 2.5 hours. I assume there will be others there for the interview. 2.5 hours is a long time for an interview. Maybe they'll give us some sort of orientation to Apple and their products. Maybe there'll be tests and quizzes. I don't know what they're going to do with us for 2.5 hours.

On an average... what do Apple store employees make an hour? What are the perks? I've thought about working there before, but I have a decent paying job now and don't want to take a pay cut.

To the OP- The 2 1/2 hours may include potential wait time too. Seems like a long interview.

Thanks

Salaries of Apple Employees

From what I've heard (I have no confirmation of this), the salaries of Apple employees vary depending on the position. However, all positions pay well.

Thanks for the heads up about the wait time; it makes sense. This may account for the long time period for the interviews.

Depends where the Apple Store is. Someone working at the Oklahoma City store is going to make less than someone working the same position at a Manhattan store.

I used to work there part time while I was finishing up school, and I got paid $11.50 in the LA market (only NY, I believe, was higher) pretty recently. The perks are 25% off Apple products for yourself, and 15% off for family/friends. You also will occasionally get free software like iLife '11, etc.

I disagree with that - I thought $11.50 was pretty terrible, actually. I took the job because I genuinely got a kick out of helping people with techie stuff, and I figured I could use the discount. I also was in school, so it wasn't really a career thing, but something to pay for clothes and alcohol. It's definitely not a career unless you start in with Apple very early on (18-20ish) and you have at least a couple of years to burn making beans. Full-time hours are generally not given right away, so add that up: $11.50 an hour times 20 hours a week - taxes = you're broke. Especially somewhere like LA, where the cost of living is very high. Geniuses and Managers make decent money, but those tracks usually take awhile.

For the billions of dollars Apple rakes in as a market leader and whatnot (which you'll learn in all of the "we're rich!" quarterly meetings you'll be attending), they're definitely not channeling that money into the pay for people low on the food chain.

I loved the people I worked with, for the most part, and the store was fun - but most everyone was always scrambling for hours and pining for promotions that were pretty rare. We also got no holiday perks or bonuses, which I thought was completely lame. Just my $.02 though, so good luck.

I applied online about 4 years ago when I was 19. I set aside 2 hours for a hiring event, and there were probably 30 people there. They had some group activities which were sorta lame, and a couple people talked about what Apple was looking for as far as personalities.

After the group stuff, everyone wandered the store and they called on people for an individual interview with about 3 people. I made a great impression and got called in for a 2nd interview, except this time it was at a cafe in the mall. I met with 2 people and they asked me some questions I don't remember. I inquired about the pay that specialists make, and they said it was in the area of $9 an hour but wouldn't tell me much more. This is at the Willow Bend in Plano, north of Dallas.

I started applying again last week, so hopefully i will get called in for more interview time.

I was invited to an Apple hiring event in January, but didn't end up getting hired.

This was exactly what happened.

Despite whatever pride you might take in working at The Apple Store, at the end of they day you're still working in a retail store at a retail wage.

Well put. I cannot force myself to work with the general public on a daily basis (my underlings will do such chores as their primary jobs). Except for the initial stages of my careers, I only go for the job in which my primary contacts would be with people with a certain level of industry experience and education. In any retail store, even a hobo or a deranged psycho can be considered a customer... (nothing against a hobo or deranged psycho as long as they don't get in my way or in my hairs).

Hahah, no kidding.

Unbelievable that people are actually applying multiple times to get a $9/hr job.

I turned down a strategy consulting job at McKinsey to work at the Apple store. Best decision of my life!

If you are in their for 2.5 hours, they may be interviewing you to replace Jobs as the CEO...

What you call 'good' pay varies on a lot of things, but if it is less than $20 an hour, it can be quite difficult to live on given the expenses of life. The real question is once you find a pay number, can you live off of it as you want to? As a retail store, it probably will not pay as well as most people would like, and more than likely, compensation will not match the amount of work you put into it. Even retail management positions do not pay very well compared to their level of stress. The odds of clearing 50 a year in most (not all) retail management positions is low, and honestly $50,000 is not enough to live off of for many people who have huge financial obligations for numerous reasons.

Once you secure your new job, you are to report back to your MacRumors buddies here in this thread about the iPad 2, the iPhone 5, and when and where the iPhone Nano is going to show up.

Deal?

Employee Transfer

I was recently hired by Apple and haven't started just yet. My interview process took about a month due to managers schedules. I'm sure it will be worth it.

Does anyone who worked at an Apple store know anything about transfer policies? I just got the job but might have to be moving in 5 months due to my wife's job but would love to transfer to another store.

If you continue posting on MR, you won't be working at an Apple Store much longer. I'm pretty sure posting on these rumor sites is strictly forbidden.

Oh I wasn't aware of that. I'll stop.

It wasn't like that at my store at all. A lot of the employees claimed to post/be aware of this forum. The NDA just basically says you can't talk about inside information (funny because they don't tell you jack early), strategies or training materials, or speak as a representative of Apple.

Lots of us posted with no issues.

That's good to know. I was getting worried for a minute there.

obviously Apple will monitor rumor sites (and MR is about the biggest) but if you keep shtum about being an Apple employee I can`t see how they`d know.
And then there`s the whole issue of actually identifying you, assuming you`re not daft enough to say where you work.
Wonder what Steve`s username is...:)
Good Luck!

That's good to know. I was getting worried for a minute there. Since you used to work at Apple, do you know anything about employee transfers or is that something that you shouldn't talk about?

You can ask your manager about it - basically they or you contact the manager at the store you'd like to transfer to and see if there's a fit. Obvi you have to have been a good worker, but it's not too difficult.
