Hi guys,

So the other day I got the grey stop on my laptop. I tried to troubleshoot on my own by doing fsxk and disc utility but fsxk didn't work. And disc utility gave me the "invalid b tree node error" and said I needed to back up files.

Now I don't have my files backed up (yes I already know that I should have) but I don't have anything that I'm dying to have. I have things that are nice to have but its not dire.

Anyway, I took my laptop to Mac Repair. Now just last year, I got the dreaded spinning wheel of death so I had this person install a brand new hard drive on my laptop. I asked if this should be happening since I just got a new hard drive last year. He said he needed to look at it to tell me. Oh and last year, he was able to save all of my files. Anyway, after diagnosis, he tells me it's a software issue and he won't be able to save my files. He said something about needing to reformat. I thought he said Hard drive but maybe he said disc. I'm confused that if he did say reformat the hard drive, how is this a software issue? He wants to charge me $70 which I suppose is reasonable.

Here are my questions. Does what he is saying make sense? If I bought a brand new hard drive just last year, should this be happening? Should I try Disc Warrior? Can Disc Warrior save my files and get my laptop running again if Mac Repair Guy says its a lost cause? And lastly, since he can't save my files, is it possible to get laptop up and running on my own and save money, even if losing data? Again, I was only taking it to him with the hope that he might be able to save data, and fix for free/give discount since I got a hard drive from him last year, but since he can't, is there something I can do for free on my own, even if losing my data? Should I just pay the $70 to get my laptop up and running again? Is this a decent rate? I know absolutely nothing about computers.

Please forgive me for the long post but I know absolutely nothing about computers. Please help!
