Invert Number Keys / Remapping

Hi,

I like to use the markdown functions in applications such as Byword and iA Writer etc, but find it frustrating being limited to use the shift key before being able to apply the symbols such as asterisks and other parenthesis.

I was wondering if there was any application, Terminal or other means of rebinding or inverting the number row with their characters to prevent the continued requirement to depress the shift key before being able to insert the keys...
