I recently picked up a MiniMax to use as an external HD with my Mac Mini that I'm currently using as a HTPC. The goal was to use it as a backup for my 3 Macs and have some extra storage for files in a nice form factor. When I powered it up I noticed that the LED on the front was extremely bright and very distracting when trying to watch movies in a dark room. I did a quick Internet search and came up similar complaints, but no real solution.
I decided to open it up and disable the light. I figured I'd post instructions for anyone looking to do the same, or anyone who just wants to open their MiniMax.
Step 1: Remove the 2 screws on the back of the MiniMax.
Step 2: Using your fingernails (or I assume a plastic putty knife works here too), you will want to push against the tab pictured below that is just above the USB ports
You'll hear a bit of a click once it is unhooked.
Step 3: From the back with the ports, slide your fingernails or putty knife down towards the bottom and use some force to release the remainder of the bottom sliding towards the front. About halfway through or so you should release all of the remaining clips with ease.
Step 4: Locate the connector pictured below and disconnect it. This is the connector for the LED. Needle nose pliers or a tiny screwdriver will do.
Of course you no longer have a power indicator, but it's pretty easy to tell when the drive is powered up or not just by feeling the case or listening closely.
