IOS 11 really ****ed up my IPad Air

Seriously since I updated to IOS 11 , it is bloody awful... unresponsive, slow , crashes , that dock crap takes ages to pop up , click on the alarm icon in control centre takes about 4 seconds to bring the screen up... it’s just awful.. and it’s made worse by how quick my X ! Anyone else having the stem problem ?.
 
Once iOS 11.2 comes out probably later in December, do a restore through iTunes. Set it up as new and keep your apps to only the necessary. Once you do that it should be fine. Keep in mind your X will still be wayyy quicker and the Air will still be well slower. The A7 is just unfortunately becoming long in the tooth. It’s crazy how far the Apple SOC’s have come in the past 4 years.

I've done the upgrade as well to my Air. While it's not as bad as it sounds like you're experiencing. Scrolling on Safari is dog slow though.
It's usable, but I'm hoping 11.2 will make a difference. As gobikerider suggested, I'm going to clean out stuff from ages ago and hopefully that'll breathe a little more life out of it.

But yeah, 4 years and it may be soon time to replace it with a newer model.
 
Turn on iCloud synch for everything, give your iPad time to synch everything, and then restore it as new in iTunes. That helped my iPad Air 2 become more responsive.

I just had to redownload the apps I wanted. Didn’t lose anything aside from old iMessages.

My Air is running fine after I nuked it and did a clean install of the OS and apps. It had been laggy to the point of not being usable after years of upgrading without a clean install, all the way back to the original iPad. Now the Air works great on iOS 11, like a new machine. The nuke and pave process was much easier than i thought it would be. I’m going to do the same with my iPhone 6.

Try turning on reduce transparency and reduce motion. That helped my old iPad 2 with iOS 9. It's still a dog, but it is really really old. Heh.
 
I've had the opposite experience. I have an original Air that was running iOS 7 and after watching several videos I decided to upgrade to iOS 11. I also had purchased a 2017 iPad so if the original Air was ruined with iOS 11, I was prepared to sell it. To my surprise, iOS 11 runs fantastic on the original Air. The performance was seriously hard to tell apart versus the 2017 iPad. So I ended up returning the 2017 iPad and i'm keeping the Air for another few years.

same here with the ipad mini 2...
ios 11 - 11.2 no help... stuttering as hell.. do a full restore doesnt help.

its time to upgrade, apple said.

already set as new, but stuttering still occurs, now trying 11.2 beta 3 and stuttering still occurs when opening multitasking from dock. i think other mini 2 is having same issue, yeah i realized it has outdated chipset and GPU. so it's okay with me.

I just spent a couple of hours nuking and paving my iPhone 6. It was getting a bit laggy, but it definitely runs much faster now after wiping, reinstalling the latest iOS 11 firmware/iOS and reinstalling all my apps (not restoring from a backup). I had not done this since getting my first iPhone 6 years ago. What a difference.

I simply connected the phone to my Mac by USB, started iTunes (latest version), clicked "Restore iPhone..." in the iTunes window, and then when it got to that point I told it to set up as new, not restore from a backup. "Erase settings" and "Erase all contents and settings" in the phone's Settings app won’t replace the operating system; "restore and setup as new" in iTunes will. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201252 describes the procedure. A factory restore erases the information and settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod and installs the latest version of iOS software.

I am not recommending this procedure, just reporting that it worked great for me. The procedure results in loss of some data, like game settings and I lost my 1SE (one second everyday) video, but not great loss and I could have saved the video. Everything else is in the cloud. Also had to wipe my Apple Watch and re-pair it. So one needs to read up a bit before doing it. But from front to back it only took me a couple of hours while I did other work at my desk.

Yeah ios11 is abit laggy even on my air 2. It's still usable however.

Heck, it stutters/hiccups occasionally on the 8 plus too.

as i can confirm that it's little stuttering too in my friends ipad mini 4, so i think it's the OS itself that doesn't mature enough in development side.

Sorry to read about your issues. I have several dozen iPad Airs sitting in my office that are running iOS11 with no issues. I recommend restoring your iPad through iTunes. Be sure you pictures, notes, ect. are saved to the cloud, so that you will get them back. Do not restore from backup, maybe something in the backup is wonky. Just download each of your apps from the app store again. I'm pretty sure your iPad will be running smoothly once again.
