Hi all,

My 5-year-old Airport Express is having issues and we are thinking about getting a new router. I know that Apple wants to get out of this modem / router business, but do you think it is worth purchasing a new Airport Extreme? Will it work okay with iOS 12 for setup?

Thank you!

I would think you’d be perfectly fine getting another one, other than the fact that there are better routers these days. I decided to get a Google router after my AirPort Extreme started acting up.

Just the fact that Apple has stopped making routers, it's not worth it. There are so many better options out these, especially the new mesh routers like Orbi and Velop.

If you’re happy with the feature set, interface, performance and reliability (pre-failure) of the Express then I’d say go ahead. Mesh certainly makes sense in larger spaces but if a single access point is working for you then the Extreme will give you the benefit of 802.11 ac and you can hang a drive off it and do wireless Time Machine.

I recently switched from airport time capsule 2TB to TP-link deco mesh system. Regretted it instantly. Connection speed slowed down significantly (from 7xxMB/s to 3xxMB/s), and I missed the convenient settings in Airport Utility.

I would recommend the Synology RT2600ac router good WiFi and excelent local drive implementation.

I have the Netgear R8000 also a good router but the local drive implementation is, how to say it politely?, not always predictable and it is also more expensive.
The Synology router management software is light years ahead of Netgear.

I have a Time Capsule, the last version made. It performs amazingly well, to the point I was actually still able to connect my laptop to the car when it was parked on the other side of the road opposite my house.
