I am interested in this, too.

Edit:
Apparently there can be a problem and following could be a solution:
Quit iTunes. Launch this iTunes installer with iPhone plugged in:
A dialogue should appear similar to "Start download for compatibility with this iPhone"
Confirm. Continue until finished. Launch iTunes.

I didn't try it myself yet, but will.

Thanks @2013.1; I haven't had a chance to sync my iOS 14 upgraded iPhone 11PM to my ol' Mac yet.

Should be able to try it out later this evening; good luck to you!

Will I still be able to backup my iPhone (with today's iOS 14 upgrade), to my ol' MacBook Pro with High Sierra 13.6?
I'm on High Sierra and use iTunes 12.8.2.3 and when I plugged my device in to update to iOS 14 and launched iTunes it prompted me to install a small package then it relaunched iTunes and it asked if I wanted to update the device to iOS 14. Everything including backups works perfectly...

Whew, this sounds positive - for our iOS 14 devices!

I know we all are on borrowed-time with our ol' Macs limiting us with High Sierra.

I'm just trying to make it to second-gen Apple Silicon next year, and then upgrading to new MacBook Pro.

As soon as I connected my iOS 14 iPhone to my macOS High Sierra, a small compatibility update popped up for installation.

Once I did that, I restarted iTunes and was able to sync/backup my iPhone! W00T!

Same here with iPad. No further compatibility update with iPhone.

I never use my MacBook Pro running macOS Mojave, but I plugged an iPad into it yesterday just to charge it. The iPad Pro 9.7" was already updated with iPadOS 14. As soon as I plugged in the USB I got a message saying that I needed to install newer software in order to use Mojave with the iPad. I ignored the message since I never use a Mac to update or backup my iPhone XR or my iPads opting to use iCloud instead. The Macs were always flaky at that anyway.

I got this too, but have to say the pop-up was far from clear what was being updated (High Sierra-->Mojave?; iTunes?). And then it took a pretty long time to download and update.

Oh, and, yes, it allows backups.

Thank you for asking, and answering, this question for me. 👍🏽😊
I'm just shocked that it wasn't asked already; iOS 14 has been out in beta for months, and many of us still run macOS High Sierra.

But then again, I don't know if Apple would have released the compatibility update until official iOS 14 release day.

Can anyone tell me if I update my iPhone 7 from iOS 12 to iOS 14 if it will still synchronize Reminders and Calendar with my mid 2011 iMac which is stuck at High Sierra 10.13.6?

YES they will - because Reminders and Calendar on both iOS & High Sierra sync via iCloud; your versions are not an issue.

I’ve been told “no” by Apple. I don’t know what to do now. I can’t sync with iTunes any more

(this is my first time posting here, so I hope this works)
I just updated my iPhone 6s to iOS 14. Then I tried to follow the scenario you all have come up with. Unfortunately, it didn't work. The computer no longer recognizes my iPhone. I'm running High Sierra 10.13.6 on a mid 2011 iMac with iTunes 12.8.2.3. I've been on the phone with Apple for an hour and they appear to have no idea...

Any ideas?

I finally got a knowledgeable person at Apple and he helped a lot. I had to do a manual download and reinstall of iTunes. Then when I plugged in my phone, iTunes recognized it, provided a link to download the patch and I was able to back up my phone.
