Apple is developing a new feature that would allow users to interact with select content and experiences in third-party apps without needing to have the apps installed, according to an early build of iOS 14 obtained by 9to5Mac.

Android Slices

The report claims a new API referred to as "Clips" in iOS 14 code would enable users to scan a QR code linked to an app and then interact with content from that app via a floating card on the screen. The card would display options to download the full version of the app from the App Store or to open the content in the app if it is already installed.

Android has a similar feature named "Slices":
Slices are UI templates that can display rich, dynamic, and interactive content from your app from within the Google Search app and later in other places like the Google Assistant. Slices can help users perform tasks faster by enabling engagement outside of the fullscreen app experience.
Apple is said to be testing the new feature with OpenTable, Yelp, DoorDash, YouTube, and Sony's PS4 Second Screen app.

QR codes are not a good interaction model. I think this would work better with RFID tags.

I have no use for this since I only use Apple apps, but I see the appeal.

iOS 14 is shaping up to be an interesting release!

I have no use for this either and I miss the days of most articles being about Macs and hardware. The only iOS feature I want is a camera feature android has. Specifically, aspect ratio selection, so when in still camera mode, you can use the physical full screen of your phone & not have portioned off bezels.

This is apple moving towards an app-free future. For a lot of apps you'd never have to install anything, which will be confusing because then it'll be difficult to figure out your user stats.

I feel like is an option on the iPhone 11's. They definitely have an option to play around with the aspect ratio.

I wish we’d get a rumor that Apple is making text selection better. For sure with iPhones but also iPads where no physical keyboard or mouse/trackpad is present. Apple removed 3D Touch but what they replaced it with is not a proper replacement.

Sounds nice. But I hope Apple won't botch the iOS 14 like iOS 12 and iOS 13. Otherwise we are interacting partially with iOS without utilizing it's full potential.

Never had a problem with any of them. Die hard Apple fan for years - Loads of things I disliked at the start but now couldn’t be without - Apple really do the work to make sure it’s right. I don’t see what apple “botched” and didn’t fix within a few days with an update. What’s the big deal. If moaning about small little bugs in one of the worlds most robust, secure and advanced mobile operating systems is all you have to worry about when people all around us are dying then man you must have one happy privileged life. Good for you bother!! Maybe you should apply to work for apples design or programming teams. I’m sure they’d love to hear your ideas. Or you could you know, use an android phone.

That's an awfully big leap based on what is stated in the article, and reflects a fundamental ignorance of how natively-installed software works.

Just leads to more "light-weight" aka crappy web serving apps. It would have been better to just install free apps, and then after using the app delete it or put it into some kind of cache do it doesn't have to be downloaded again.

12 was wonderful. I still have it on my old 5s I use around the house and love it. The old 7.1.2 was solid as a rock and fast as hell. I miss it.

8 was a disaster... but wqs nothing compared to 11, when Apple intentionally destroyed the batteries in ALL my iOS devices, and millions of others around the world - the multiple states suing them for that led to 12.

13 is not nearly as bad as 8 was, but it's still been terrible the whole time. And it has offered me exactly zero benefit as compared to 12. 12 feels a lot like 7.1.4, just slower.

Apple should make iOS RAM Management its Top Priority for iOS 14 !

When the 2016 7+ was Released, iOS RAM Mgmt was solid (I'd give it a solid A-).

Today, iOS RAM Mgmt sucks BIG time (D- grade).

Few know that between the Release of the 2016 and now, Apple's philosophy transitioned from believing Users own the Hardware, to a "Managed Device" philosophy ! ... IMO, that's the core of the problem !

Stated differently, they don't believe Users own what they've paid for !

And here, I mean the DRAM !
Why are you blaming Apple only? If you're using only stock apps sure, but a lot of third party apps are getting bigger and bigger with every update, so it makes sense the optimization should come from them too. Also RAM optimization is nothing without sufficient physical RAM. 6GB for the next iPhones is the minimum they should put now.

Amen to that. Positioning the cursor on my iPhone 8 is a joy (with force touch on the keyboard, quite effortless, just happens without having to really give it thought). On the iPad, it’s not so great. Two fingers on the keyboard seems to guess wrong between positioning and selecting, half the time. And selecting in the text directly is maddening without the magnifying glass to see what’s under your finger. And it frequently “helpfully” moves the cursor to where it thinks you probably meant. If I’m trying to fix a character in the middle of a word, often it’ll “helpfully” move the cursor to the start or one of the word (similar to how, often, after you carefully type a complex name, autocarrot will “helpfully” correct it to a common word). Half the time I just give up and retype the whole word. This is not how a “best in class” OS should operate.

You can change the aspect ratio to 16:9 that makes it closer to screen size!

Just slide up in the camera app and select the ratio.

Do you really care more about having the image cropped to fit the display while shooting the picture, than about having the phone use the full size of the image sensor available? You can always crop later.
