so when you update to ios 16.4, it asks to turn on automatic updates with the options of "continue" and "only automatic update". so which of those exactly is "no"? because i clicked continue and checked settings and it had turned on automatic updates.

and this isn't intended as a discussion about whether or not you *should* automatically update. the point is they made a screen that gives the illusion of choice but basically doesn't care what the user actually chooses. wish i'd grabbed a screenshot, but i'm quite positive thats what happened.

This is rather simple. Go to Settings > Automatic Updates.

Within Automatic Updates, there are three things you can turn on. If you turn off all three, then Automatic Updates indicates Off.

doesn't change the fact that they put up a screen asking a question, and both options amount to "yes". further, its worded in a way that that doesn't even make it clear thats whats happening. so if you were trying to avoid an update and didn't think to check that apple hadn't ignored your input, you might end up getting a device updated that you didn't want.

I don't think I really follow.

When I go to Settings > Automatic Updates and turn off all 3 choices, Automatic Updates is now indicates as Off.

In my understanding of your original post, you indicated you had already updated to iOS 16.4 and want to turn off automatic updates.

My point was automatic updates were off before I updated. And after updating it turned them back on in a very deceptive manner. If they are ok with putting a screen asking you whether you want them on, and then designing it so you can’t say “no”, then they are not above simply turning them back on at random with no indication whatsoever.

It could be poor instructional text rather than a nefarious intention. Anyhow, I hope you are able to turn it off and it doesn't come back on automatically.

agreed, and thanks. i do think apple should do better with regards to this kind of thing though. my ipad for example is at a point where updates just make it increasingly unusable, and i would not want an accidental update to render it even worse.

Some of us have lousy cellular data plans. Downloading the continual stream (for a few years, 5?, anyway) of ios updates would eat all of our data, so it is better to download over non-cellular data sources. That setup was undone by apple changing my phone from what I had intentionally setup.

I have a lousy data plan. Do you suggest turning off Security Responses & System Files too?

This sounds similar to how Apple uses most iPhones as crowdsource beacons to support their AirTag system. You need know how to turn that off if you don’t want it.

They just extended the functionality where they enable bluetooth after an update. At least they fixed where they would enable Game Center after an update. I still check what icloud functionality is enabled after an update but I haven’t seen problems in this area for several updates.
