As part of its iOS 16 presentation at WWDC, Apple today revealed that iPhone users now have access to the Fitness app regardless of whether they have an Apple Watch or not.

Previously, the Fitness app was only accessible on iPhones that are paired with an Apple Watch, but no more.

On an iPhone with iOS 16 installed, the Fitness app will use the iPhone's motion sensors to track things like steps, meaning all the activity that your iPhone tracks can be put toward closing your rings. You can set up a daily Move goal in the Fitness app and see how your active calories will help close your Move ring.

The iPhone's motion sensors can track steps, distance, flights climbed, and workouts from third-party apps, which can be converted into an estimation of active calories to contribute to your daily Move goal. You can also share your Move ring with friends for additional motivation.

yeah!!
I've gone on walks and thought it would be nice if I could track stuff like my wife's Apple Watch can with the Fitness App.

Still waiting for Apple to add Food and diet tracking. They should purchase Lifesum and get it over with.

Finally, maybe I’ll upgrade my iCloud+ subscription again since I can do the workouts without a watch.

I had a non-Apple health band (Mi Band) - which connected perfectly well with the health app on my phone. (Until the Mi Band got lost.) Heart rates, stairs climbed, steps. Never aware I didn't have access because I don't have an Apple Watch!

Kind of useless without the heart rate to measure calorie burn and zone tracking.
The last paragraph isn’t super clear, but it looks like it may be that third-party apps that do track calorie burn can be fed in.

While I'm sure the functionality is somewhat reduced (understandably), I was in search of a light fitness experience and I didn't want to get an apple watch just for that.
I'll probably take advantage of this, as limited as it might be.

Has anyone gotten this to work yet?
I can see a test workout from a non-apple app show up in Fitness app but it doesn’t seem to affecting the Move ring.

I would love to se my Apple Watch mirroring a bike ride on my iPhone... Speed, distance and heart rate. They shown the Nike Run live notification on the Keynote, but not the native workout app.

I tried Apple Watch en Fitness tracking, but sold it and bought a real (Garmin) sport watch. Apple Watch isn't good enough for serious Multi Sport activities, yes you can use it for that but so many missing data points!

Good to see that Apple is adding some running metrics and sporting zones, but it still can't stand in the shadow of what Garmin has to offer.

I wish you could use a Garmin Watch for Apple Fitness +
I don't want all those notifications and distractions, short battery life of the  Watch, but I do like Apple Fitness +.

Will it talk to other watches such as Garmin?
