Did they even bother testing? Smart punctuation? I write this post by using dictation on iOS 16, and, even though I have turned off smart punctuation it continues to place punctuation smartly. Throughout my sentences.

I don't know about everyone else, but, I would think. That, when you turn something off, it should remain, switched off and not continue to function across dictation.

This is a very poor operating system and not properly tested.

Lol "smartly". I'd beg to differ, Apple!

You turned off smart punctuation, but did you turn off auto punctuation?

Checking for Walken level of punctuation. Check.

My god, I think wild sky has done it!!

Punked Smartuation!!

Ever since I updated to iOS 16 voice dictation accuracy has been horrible specifically referring to punctuation. It keeps trying to add commas and periods in places where they simply don't belong. Occasionally it will correct one of my grammatical mistakes but more often than not it is nonsense and misinterpreting my thoughts. For instance just now I was trying to write "car insurance and phone bill" but it changed it to car, insurance, and phone bill". Like who are you to think you know more about what Im trying to say than me?

It's insanely infuriating since I use voice to dictation for 95% of my interactions. Further more, I'm used to saying "period" at the end of the sentence.... I'm fine with doing that but it keeps on trying to split my sentences up and add more periods where and when they dont belong. Like I said, occasionally it does correct a run on sentence that I knew I was making anyway I just don't care enough, but most of the time its making bad decisions.

Am I missing a setting somewhere or something like that like can I shut off whatever is making you do this now all of a sudden? edit: I found it. We'll see if it works.

If you're wondering, Smart Punctuation does things like changing your quotation marks from like "this" (") to “this” (“”). It has nothing to do with dictation.

Agree yes, many of us finally worked it out - but Apple has put it under the menu hierarchy linked to the dictation button (click and hold):

Dictation Settings…—>Smart Punctuation

Many people are getting confused.

No, wait that's not right. Smart Punctuation is under Settings > General > Keyboards > All Keyboards.
Auto Punctuation is under Settings > General > Keyboards > Dictation

That’s the point – Apple have mistakenly made it so that when you press and hold on the microphone button for dictation on the bottom right hand of the keyboard, it has a menu that is incorrectly labelled as “Dictation Settings…”.

The menu that results has on it “smart punctuation”.

This is what is making some people confused.

You have to scroll to the bottom of that same menu to get to the actual “Dictation Settings…”.

It is a lazy attempt at labelling on Apple’s part for iOS 16.

Instead “Dictation Settings…” should shortcut across to the actual Dictation Settings header on the resulting menu.

Or, “Dictation Settings…” should have its own menu.

The fact that this is tripping people up is reasonable evidence of a poorly thought out operating system and a lack of user testing.

Oh! I got you now, ok. Yeah, that's dumb for sure. Hope you'll report it via apple.com/feedback.
