Later this year, Apple will give developers the ability to create live lock screen notifications that it's calling "Live Activities."

Live Activities are similar to widgets on the iPhone home screen, but instead, reside on the bottom of the Lock Screen and can display dynamic and real-time information. During WWDC, Apple showcased how Live Activities could be used to track how far an Uber ride is or scores for a current sports game.

Live Activities will be available to users via a software update later this year and will not ship with the initial release of iOS 16.

It will be great to have a live lock screen notification widget for the Uber app and other apps as well, such as sports

Uber used to have an app for the Apple Watch but they discontinued it. It was always great for this very purpose- to track your driver without having to open the Uber app
I’m most excited for the sports live notification. They demoed an MLB one I believe during the keynote.

Hoping you can also access these from the notifications pulldown. They look very useful but wouldn't want to have to keep locking my iPhone to see them if I'm actually using it at the time, they need to be available also when unlocked.

This is one of my favorite new additions to iOS - the ability to glance at the Home Screen to see a sports score, a delivery status, or the price of your favorite stock without needing to open the phone and launch an app is a great usability improvement for iPhone users.

I remember when they demoed Uber with rich notifications that showed live tracking as well, that never happened.

And if I recall correctly, lots of things demoed by developers never follow through.

This has a huge potential to become really useful, especially when navigating. You could keep Maps in the background and get live notifications on your lockscreen.

This is actually a really nice feature.

But then that tagline - won't come with the initial launch of iOS 16, so we can reasonably expect to see it after the new year.

This is great, however, I hope apps will ask if you want it there other than just every app putting out something

Missed the keynote yesterday, but I’m excited for this feature, too. I’m surprised this article/thread doesn’t have more comments. So many ways this can be useful.

Live Activities looks like it should be able to take the place entirely of notifications for many purposes, which is great news for those of us annoyed by functional and advertising notifications mixed together.

Does it allow true, real time, constant updates? Because Home Screen widgets actually don’t (or maybe they do now in iOS 16?) allow that and put a limit on how frequently Home Screen widgets can update. That limitation is what has prevented my most desired feature for years. I want something that will display nearby subway arrival times without having to open an app. Adding the ability to put this in a permanent widget on the Lock Screen so I don’t even have to unlock my phone would be the holy grail for me.

Only Apple hardcore fans always uses the word, if you want x go to android. But when Apple give us x we have asked for months if not years they don’t complain

Every single year since iOS was first announced, Apple have added more features and customizability options to iOS.

Same with tools for developers.

Not most years.

Every. Single. Year.

So when you suggest that the continuation of this trend is somehow new and novel and that hardcore Apple fans should revolt, all I know is that what you're saying does not line up with reality.
