Below, we outline when to expect iOS 18.1 to be released.

iOS 18.1: Apple Intelligence Features

Here are some of the key Apple Intelligence features in the iOS 18.1 beta so far:

  • A few Siri enhancements, including improved understanding for both follow-up requests and when you stumble over your words
  • Writing tools for rewriting, summarizing, and proofreading text
  • Notification summaries
  • Suggested replies in the Messages and Mail apps
  • A new "Clean Up" tool in the Photos app that can remove unwanted people or objects from photos and use generative AI to fill in the background
  • The ability to create a Memories movie in the Photos app by typing a description
  • Transcription summaries for phone call recordings
  • A new Focus mode called Reduce Interruptions that surfaces important notifications only

Apple Intelligence will gain more features and support for additional languages on a gradual basis between iOS 18.2 and iOS 18.4.

iOS 18.1: Release Date

During its iPhone 16 event last month, Apple confirmed that iOS 18.1 will be released in October, but it did not provide a specific day.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple plans to release iOS 18.1 on Monday, October 28.

iOS 18.1: Compatible iPhones

iOS 18.1 supports the same iPhone models as iOS 17 does, but Apple Intelligence requires an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 model.

I feel like any article that can mention Mark Gurman does. Why?

This seems like the easiest rumor for him to get wrong we're already less than 2 week outs from his hypothetical event without an announcement. That guess was hanging on the October 18.1 release and a pattern of Tuesday announcement, Monday software release Tuesday Hardware release. That is starting to see off now, but he had to guess that Sunday or else not get to predict, but as the days go buy and the invite doesn't come out it seems like he'll be wrong again.

just fix the bugs please. or squash them, whatever they wanna call it. I bought a Pro phone to have a solid picture taking experience, and the dang thing crashes half the time. so much for the best camera is the one in my pocket.

I’ve been using the beta on my 16P and honestly? There’s not much here. Siri has a new border light around the screen which is kinda cool lol. The only helpful thing from this batch of features I’ve used is notification summary. I really enjoy when my 4 DoorDash updates can be condensed automatically into one. “Order picked up, on the way, arriving in 3 mins” love that! Every single other feature so far I either don’t use or haven’t noticed. There is nothing new here.

And not for nothing, I know this is anecdotal, but since the release of this phone, not 1, not 2, but 3 friends have swapped to Pixel who were lifelong Apple users.

I've taken several hundred stills and a couple dozen videos of various lengths and haven't experienced any crashes. You must be using a third-party photo app enhancer that isn't playing well with the current iOS.

Why does “order picked up, on the way…” require AI? You could achieve this with like 4 lines of code designed to just concatenate the text from updates and remove some common filler words so you don’t affect a user’s interpretation of the resulting single line of text. Is that the “Apple Intelligence” I upgraded for?

You know you could just turn it off right?

Just an old device; it's not really a flex/
"I'm so glad my device is low on ram and doesn't have the required 8GB!!"
Well, I don't think that is so easy as just turning it off. Maybe it turns off the front-end functionality for the user, but I'm completely sure that some AI stuff will still crawl some usage data from the iPhone to train the models.
