In iOS 18, Apple has added a control in the Camera app's Settings menu that lets you choose whether audio playing on your iPhone should pause or continue when you start recording in Video mode.

In previous versions of iOS, shooting in Video mode in the Camera app automatically pauses any playing audio including music and podcasts. This behavior is based on the assumption that you don't want any sound coming out of your iPhone's speakers to be picked up on the video recording, but it's no good if you want to play a soundtrack to accompany whatever you're shooting.

One way to get around this is to use the QuickTake method of recording video in Photo mode, introduced in iOS 13, which allows any audio playback to continue during shooting. The only issue is that QuickTake records in lower quality than Video mode is capable of.

But that won't matter soon, because iOS 18 lets you control what happens to audio playback in dedicated Video mode, thanks to a new Allow Audio Playback toggle. "Audio playback will not pause automatically when recording video," notes Apple under the setting. "When playing audio using the iPhone speaker, audio will be recorded in mono."

iPhone users can look forward to several new features when iOS 18 arrives in the fall, around mid-September, with new customization options, generative AI features, Siri improvements, and more. For details on everything that's new, be sure to check out our dedicated iOS 18 roundup.

So now when I record a video with music playing through CarPlay on the default camera app it works just fine. When I open Snapchat and go to take a video it sounds all messed up still. Hopefully something they can fix!

Can someone explain this is kindergarten language. LOL.

If i'm recording a video, it's going to pick up sound. Unless i'm missing something

Hola about just giving us a much needed “pause” button?. Incredibly iPhone video app does not have it!. Amazing and another proof that Apple bosses don’t use their products beyond the Developer Conference…

There was always a workaround to do this but the video quality was much reduced (sliding the shutter button when in photo mode)

Glad to see they’ve added it to the roster

Why would you need this out of curiosity. I'm glad it doesn't let you do this. Hurts my brain on my Mac
In my experience, the biggest use case is where you have music playing in the background and you’re scrolling in Safari. Just scrolling a muted video into view will take over the audio, stopping your music. If you’re scrolling on X Twitter, where there’s a lot of videos you’re scrolling past, it’s maddening! It basically makes it impossible to listen to music while using certain sites in Mobile Safari.

Well this is too late
I kinda outgrew instagram years ago
I aint into uploading stories like that anymore. I know u can have music but it was ******** especially if the song u had in mind wasn’t on their database

I always thought for some reason this was hardware related. Then when recording in Snapchat i realized the music keeps playing so it was an engineer that thought I forgot my music was playing so wanted to pause it … (could also be for drm…) any app that pauses my music while I am listening is evil to me. Looks at Instagram…

iOS already allows for it. The applications have change their code to use the feature and apparently many applications don’t. Apple’s GarageBand does (via a setting to play in the background) and so do other audio apps, folks just need to reach out to the developer of the app they want to have this feature and request it. Of course, the developer is free to say “no” to the request, but this hasn’t been an OS issue for awhile.

The fact Apple needs to waste resources specifically for this feature just shows that they’re starting see how limiting audio playback is a pain in the ass

Finally....
this means you can record while talking... it was long due

Cool. How about a toggle to disable Dynamic Tone Mapping? It causes a brightness/color change in video even when the exposure is locked. Third party apps can’t circumvent it, because Apple has not allowed developers the ability to disable Dynamic Tone Mapping.

I sent a few email to Tim Cook about that issue almost 10 years ago 😂

Hopefully they make it easy to switch between setting this on and off without having to go to Settings each time. Would be nice to turn on and off while in the video mode on the phone.

I would much rather have them let recording continue if I switch to another app.... FFS... sometimes you're recording something and want to read a message or something, which stops the recording and is really freaking annoying.
