For iCloud Mail users, there are several features coming in iOS 18 that make email management easier. Apple outlined the new functionality in its recently released iOS 18 features list, which covers more than 250 additions to the operating system update.

iCloud Mail Cleanup

There are new cleanup tools that can be accessed for iCloud Mail from the Mail app, iCloud.com, and iCloud Mail settings.

Manage Old Emails

Time-based rules can be added for removing emails that are no longer needed to save storage. The rules use the Mail categories that will be coming in a later iOS 18 update for cleanup actions like automatically deleting or archiving promotional emails that are unread and over a year old.

Unsubscribe and Delete

iCloud Mail can help you unsubscribe from senders in bulk, sending future emails from those senders to Trash.

iOS 18 is set to be released on Monday, September 16, but the iCloud Mail functionality may not be added until a later iOS 18 update.

Always like to see new iCloud features. Obviously, none of this has anything to do with the silent filtering/reliability issues in the past, or the lack of read status push updates. I can't help but wonder if those will ever be addressed.

Maybe—just maybe—Apple will finally give us an easy way to mass-delete iMessage attachments, like all those photos and videos that balloon your iCloud storage until Apple’s nudging you to 'upgrade' (aka: pay more). For years, we've been stuck downloading and manually deleting these files one-by-one, then waiting an awkward 30 days for iCloud to finallycatch up before we can turn backups on again.

Meanwhile, Apple’s silently chanting, 'Buy more storage, buy more storage!' It’s like they’ve perfected the art of making things just annoying enough that you consider giving in. Classic money-making move: make life inconvenient unless you pay extra.

And no, I’m not about to delete all my iMessages after 365 days—what if I need proof of that very specific text I sent my plumber ages ago? Trust me, I’m going to need that receipt when his 'fix' comes undone.

At the moment I have both an iCloud and a gmail account, using my gmail account for most things, but this makes me wonder about maybe switching to iCloud, I feel it would be a lot more private.

As soon as iCloud got custom domains, I dropped my decades long email host and have gone 100% iCloud. It's been adequate and I keep it because of how well integrated it is into my Apple ecosystem but there are some shortcomings in junkmail management and sorting rules that I hope this update will improve on.

Best email service I've ever used. Do you know how many true spam emails I've received in 4+ years of use? Can't be more than 1 or 2. Not kidding.

Maybe they will fix the issue I'm having where I have an alias that I need to remove or disable, it doesn't allow either. Worked with Apple Support and got nowhere

I recommend Proton Mail.

Archiving needs to be improved. Microsoft offers proper archiving of folders for example, which Apple should be offering by now.

And yet still no fix for iCloud NOTES, that does not allow for Font color changes. Add a font color on the iPhone and the NOTE disappears in iCloud. Also where is the Font color option in iCloud?

How about creating proper flexible inbox filtering rules similar to what is available in Mail.app on Mac? What they currently have on the server side is a joke.

I'll never understand Apple. Two decades and still no read status push updates across all devices. Nothing beats working on your mac all day to find 17 email notifications on your iPhone.

I've given up hope on read push updates. I don't understand why they do it for iMessage but not their own email service.

I had both, I now just forward my gMail email (and Hotmail TBH) to my iCloud address. Over the years I've been changing my email address from gMail to me.com to be able to use push on my iPhone and not have another app. It's rare I get stung by Apple's silent email filtering and the spam filtering is pretty good. Hide my email is great (I know you can add +whatever to your gmail address to track whose selling your email, but hide my email lets you deactivate which is good. I'm looking fowared to the new AI email features coming soon. I just need to decide what replaces my 11, 15 Pro on base 16 🤔
