iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models running iOS 17.2 or later can record spatial video with 3D depth for playback on Apple's Vision Pro headset. While spatial video recording has been limited to Apple's built-in Camera app until this point, third-party camera apps on the App Store can also offer this functionality starting on iOS 18.

In a WWDC 2024 coding session last week, Apple revealed that it has released an API that allows developers to offer spatial video recording in any app. Apple said the API is built into existing camera-related frameworks, making it easy to implement.

When held in landscape orientation, the iPhone 15 Pro's main and ultra wide cameras combine to record spatial video. In addition to the iPhone 16 Pro models, it is likely that spatial video recording will be expanded to the regular iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, as the rear cameras on those devices are rumored to be vertically aligned.

You will need a Vision Pro to see the added depth in spatial videos, as they appear in a normal 2D format when played on an iPhone.

iOS 18 is currently in beta, and it should be released in September.

I use this app to capture and manipulate spatial videos and PHOTOS to be viewed on an old 3D display ;)

Im using proshot right now, I like the UI a lot. I also wish that apple would allow us to uninstall default camera app, and also turn off the swipe to open a camera in the lockscreen.

You can disable the default camera in App Limits under Screen Time, and it will kill access from the lock screen as well. I have it disabled because I don't want to give camera access to anyone with my locked device.

iOS 18 lets you change the apps on the lock screen, including to another camera app.

Do these videos have much spacial depth to them? 3D cameras have wide spacing between the lenses to simulate the distance between human eyes.

Ever since I was a kid and used the old Viewmaster system, I’ve enjoyed 3d content. For some reason I didn’t get much out of 3d on TVs (apparently neither did most people as that faded quickly) but I do enjoy 3d content on my Quest headset and am thinking about getting an AppleVision headset to see their implementation. It really is a cool way to visit places.

Best thing about spatial video is that it forces people to record properly in landscape mode. Wish Apple forced that with the built in camera app for regular video.
Have an app called Horizon and it automatically landscapes your recording by digitally turning the video to the correct position no matter any orientation. :p

Yes, pretty good for up close shots - it uses the ultra wide angle lens and the normal lens, and from what i gather just a portion of the wide angle further away from the other lens to emphasize that wider distance you refer to

Third-party apps are already able to do it, but I'm guessing they had to reverse engineer it. If Apple's making this announcement I guess it means they're opening up APIs to third party developers.

The Spatialify app lets you take spatial videos in higher resolution than Apple's built-in camera does. And as you said, photos. I love taking still photos in 3D. It's also allowed me to convert 3D images I took 30 years ago with a film-based 3D camera into spatial photo format. And they look great on the Vision Pro!

Many apps and features rely on what the default camera is, including but not limited to, device pairing, QR code scanning, document scanning, etc.

Removing the default camera is not as simple as one might think.
