One of the new Apple Intelligence features coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 is Genmoji, which allows you to instantly create your own custom emoji.

AI-generated emoji can be created with text prompts like "smiley relaxing wearing cucumbers" or "t-rex wearing a tutu on a surfboard."

Just like emoji, Apple says Genmoji can be added to messages, shared as a sticker, or used as a Tapback reaction in the Messages app.

Apple Intelligence features are not included in the first beta of iOS 18, and instead will become available for testing over the U.S. summer.

iOS 18 should be publicly released in September.

That's the power of Apple Intelligence.

Will this put Apple's emoji creators out of a job?

ALOT.

I just hope they can be shared. I would love to build a library with clever emojis from others.
No, you'll have to pay for Discord Apple Nitro if you want to use custom emojis between servers iMessage threads

Can I create a custom emoji that allows me to install macOS on my iPad Pro? Oh, and a custom emoji that automatically creates new VisionPro content so that I can dust it off and use it?

Could be a bad idea. Emojis are supposed to be word-like pictograms. They're supposed to convey meaning. Continual exposure to new one-time emojis is like people using made up words all the time. Makes them more like how we use gifs now.

This is brilliant. I can’t tell how many times I wanted to use an emoji that seemed like something you would expect to be available and it wasn’t.

This is essentially the new “Blue Message Bubble” for attracting people into the iOS ecosystem. Those images being images and not Unicode characters breaks cross platform applications, or at least makes them much harder.

Gboard has the same feature on android. They need to create a standard to interpret generated nonstandard emojis at some point.
