Apple is expanding its AutoFill feature for one-time verification codes on iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe.

One-Time-Code-AutoFill-Feature-2.jpg

Software engineer Jane Manchun Wong discovered that iOS 26 can automatically fill in one-time verification codes from third-party apps, like Google Voice. The feature previously only worked with codes from Apple's Messages app on the iPhone.

As noted by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, macOS Tahoe can automatically fill in one-time verification codes from the Messages app in Google Chrome and other third-party web browsers. The feature was previously limited to Safari on the Mac.

These are two great quality-of-life improvements to this crowd-pleasing AutoFill feature.

iOS 26 and macOS Tahoe are currently available in developer beta, with public betas to follow next month. The software updates will be released to the general public later this year, bringing these AutoFill improvements to all users.

Oh, nice! I just confirmed I autofilling an SMS code to Firefox works on Mac now! Honestly, one of the few things that keeping me with Safari...
oo that's good news.

I use Firefox (there's a few things it has in addition to customisation that keep me using it vs Safari) and auto-filling codes (then auto-deleting them) is something I miss.

Anything to improve autofill works for me. I have 2 factor on everything and if I can just autofill a code without leaving the app, it will impact me a few times a day.

It also works with the Mail app. Not only the Messages app.

If they could get push messages working with Gmail again this would be worth something. (I know it’s Google’s fault for turning off Exchange Activesync, but I don’t like the Gmail app.) As it is now, I have to switch to the Mail app so it downloads the new email, then switch back to the website, where Safari pulls the code from the email about 50% of the time. Easier to just open the email and copy/remember the number than use an unreliable system.

I wish I could lean entirely on Safari and leverage this, I have to use Edge because Chromium browsers just seem to work better with all the tools and services we use for our clients.

Can they get it working with Authenticator? That's becoming increasingly annoying as I have more and more accounts that use an authenticator app instead of texting or emailing me the codes.
1Password can generate one-time codes and insert them automatically. Have they added that feature to the Passwords app yet?

I like 1Password and have used it for 12 years or more. I also like the Apple Passwords app, just wish it would allow you to encrypt it with a password that’s not your Apple ID, and also add custom fields and attachments. For a newish app it works very well, just waiting for other features before I get rid of my 1Password subscription. At present, 1Password does far too much that Apple Passwords doesn’t. For most people however, I’m sure it’s plenty functional.

I think the biggest reason is because the 16 will be considered the old gen in 3 months.. Come on MacRumors lol. Not many people are buying phones this time of year anyways unless they have to

One word: Passkeys.

I hate authenticating 3 times for a single website: email, password and then the verification code. That’s 3 fingerprint readouts for one login.

Hopefully they figure out how to get email codes to work in Tahoe because it hasn't worked for a single second in Sequoia for me.

Amazing. As a Firefox user on Mac this is one of the annoying things that would be a welcome addition :)

It is a very useful feature. Good to see that it is expanding. Should make everything much easier.

How about autofilling credit card info in apps? I believe they’ve moved it from Safari settings into Wallet, so I hope that would mean I can autofill credit cards in apps.
