I saw my first iPhone app update today that includes the new "glass" icon style.

Will all apps start using this outline around the icon?

I don't like it!

😡

Yes, iOS 26 does it automatically though, so I'm surprised that developer baked the new look into their app icon. It's going to mess with the shimmering effect that occurs around the icons when the screen is tilted.

Interesting, thanks!

Well I guess I'll have to endure this for a few years until we swing the other way back to "flat" being in style again.

Having been on iOS 26 since beta 3 I can say that I really enjoyed the glass for about 6 weeks but the honeymoon is nearly over. I'm starting to get annoyed with little things in it. For example if you use dark icons, it adds that stupid shimmer around the icon which depending on the wallpaper color usually just ends up making the icon look like misshapen square. I also feel like the icons lost resolution in the change and lack vibrancy. So I find myself having to use the clear glass icons because it hides that misshape better and I don't have to look at those dull color icons. Also some of the notifications can be hard to read depending on what your wallpaper is but thats been an issue all along with liquid glass.

I do like the new lock screen layouts better but that's about it. I can't help but feel that iOS 26 is going to age poorly, and quickly. I think that in a year or two this is going to look really old and tired. There are some good os concepts out there showing what liquid glass could have been so hopefully Apple pays attention and incorporates some of those ideas.

How many people will ditching Apple for Android before it makes Apple rethink this weird OS. I've been on iPhone since the 3g and never thought I'd start looking at Android but the Pixel 10 has me thinking.... But it seems like a mountain of work to offload all my Apple accesories and pick up pixel equivalents.

Just wait until you notice that when you swipe up out of an app, the "outline" isn't there, and then magically appears 1/2 second later!
I didn’t notice that before, but now I do and I hate it. I think iOS 26 needed a couple more months in the oven. I’m still seeing far too many visual bugs around all of the operating systems. My iPad has crashed twice on the RC.

Everything is usable to me, but I’m not sure if the general public is ready for it.

The shimmery edge looks really cheap to me. Not sure who thought it was a good idea to highlight the edge of shapes like that.
I wasn't entirely a fan of it either, but it has started to grow on me. Part of me still wishes they left the app icons alone, though.

Not only does iOS 26 add glare to the borders, it will also "glassify" the app icons (depending on the graphics). A company may design an icon based on their logo, but iOS will be like "Nope...gonna make it look like glass." I wonder if app developers have control to prevent this. Some companies are very particular about their logo/brand and don't want someone else to be changing it.

It's more prominent when using light icons. The colors are embossed and look like layered slabs of glass.

When using dark icons, they look flatter and more the way the developer intended them to be (except for the glare).

It's not going to stay like this (at least not completely). They will tweak it after seeing what doesn't really work. Whether that's in a later version of iOS 26 or in 27/28. That's what they did after the last redesign with iOS 7.
