So it was starting to get on my nerves the fact that 4.0 was bogging down my iPhone 3G. I have been waiting on the white iP4 and since it is delayed again, I decided to do a complete restore.
First off let me say, all of my contacts and calendars are synced through Exchange so I didn't have to do alot of legwork. You do have the option to reload your contact and calendars after restore, but I didn't want any remnants of 2.0, 2.0.1, 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1, 3.1.1 or 3.1.3 to potentially bog down my phone.
First, I took a screenshot(click home and lock at the same time) of all of my pages, folders, phone favorites, and email setup. I saved all of the photos from my camera roll onto my computer
I had some old notes that were still "on my iphone" that I individually copied and pasted into my synced Yahoo notes.
In iTunes, SYNC FIRST. If all goes to crap you can always revert back.(I believe you hold shift when clicking on restore and it will let you pick a restore file)
Then click restore. I selected set up as new phone.
After the restore is complete it will ask if you want to add back your old contacts and calendar items, since my were synced the Exchange,
I said no.
After all is complete, you have a phone as if you just bought it, no customizations. You will need to redo all of your email, screens and folders. This is where you will use the screenshots you took before.
You will lose:
Old Text messages
Call History
Photos in Camera Roll
Favorites in Phonebook
Bookmarks in Safari
Screen setups
Wifi Passwords
Basically anything that is stored directly on the phone
So far the phone is much snappier. Clicking back and forth through the different folder in Mail is much more fluid. No more waiting on the phone to "load" before the onscreen buttons work. For the most part, all of the applications are much faster at startup. The "frozen" screen that I used to experience all the time has yet to happen.
Hope this helps someone.
The entire process took me about 2 hours, including waiting on itunes to reinstall all of my apps, photos and videos.
