Is there a list of the iOS 4 features that are disabled on the 3G? I'm trying to decide if it's worth my time to upgrade.

The main features you will miss out on are Multitasking and the Home Screen Wallpaper. I jailbroke my iPhone 3g with iOS4 and ended up reverting back to the GM iOS4. Multitasking and Home screen Wallpaper were left off by Apple for one main reason - those features slow down the camera.

We decided to get the iPhone 4 for both my wife and I - will likely use the old 3G phones as iPod Touches...

Where did you find that information?? They only said no multitasking on 3G
I would like to see wallpaper feature on Monday :(

He's right. No home wallpapers unless you jailbreak it. And Apple said, "some features aren't supported."

I put ios4 on an iPhone 3G, and used the redsn0w hack to give it multitasking and wallpaper. Everything runs smoothly unless you have 5 or 6 apps running at the same time, that does tend to slow the 3G down quite a bit.

If you have any questions feel free to ask me.

I'm a bout to get a really cheap ($40) 8gb iPhone 3g from cell provider, so it's possible to upgrade to iOS4 and have multitasking, am I right?

Multitasking is not supported by iPhone 3G, but there is a way around it. I have it on a 3g and it works great! You will just have to use redsn0w to crack it.

so is possible to upgrade to iOS 4 and enable multitasking via redsn0w...

Do you have video with the update?

Yep... Mine is 3G~ I can use all the iOS4 feature now!!

Download redsn0w and follow those and tick Enable multitasking, home screen wallpaper and battery percentage. Cheers

After you done all that, your iOS4 will have all the same feature same as 3Gs and 4 : )

No wallpaper on the 3g? I cant imagine it would be that taxing...

Oh well, it only has to last me until I get my hands on the iphone 4.

being stuck with a 3g with 128mb of ram for 2 years and the new iphone having 512mb of ram the speeds are gonna be blazing :D

I did the jailbreak and elected for the multitasking and the background. I didnt want the battery percentage, not knowing weather or not it would be very accurate. I also am not interested in Cydia at this time, so I also didnt add that. To my surprise, it actually runs pretty snappy on my 3G. However, I know if I ever want to add Cydia or get the battery percentage, all I have to do is rerun the jailbreak.

Does the jailbreak ask you which options to choose from (ie multitasking, background, cydia, battery percentage), or do you need to do something else after you do the jailbreak to enable those features?

Redsn0w lets you choose the individual options, PwnageTool 4.0 is either all off or all on.
