I just upgrade my iPhone 3G to an iPhone 4. My wife has never been an iPhone fan but has agreed to give it a go on a trial basis. I didn't however upgrade my 3G to iOS 4 prior to getting my iP4 because it was coming so soon after. I have put my wife's 3G AT&T sim in my old 3G iPhone and it works. You can't access the Google Maps or any other data plan features b/c she has no data plan. If she ends up liking it I will probably add the $15/mo plan and eventually get her an iP4 handset.

But for this trial run, I didn't know if I can run the iOS 4 update on the handset or if it will need any sort of reactivation at that point and cause me problems. Many users has commented on the fact that iOS 4 on a 3G has resulted in fewer dropped calls, etc. So I would like to upgrade the OS for her too. But if that is not going to work I can leave it as is.

Also, if iOS 4 won't be an issue, will it matter if I restore from backup, wipe it, set it up new. I would prefer just to install what she needs and make it fairly bare bones since she won't have data. What she really needs is to get used to the touchscreen and how the contacts, SMS, etc. interfaces to get a taste for it.

Thanks for any feedback.
