If I remember correctly, there has never been more than 4 beta versions.

95% of the time they are released 2 weeks apart but with iCloud and Lion coming as well, it may be every 3 weeks.

WWDC was June 6th, and 13 weeks later is September 5th, with iOS 5 expected to release sometime in September.

So, if we're looking at 4 betas prior to release, and using the first week of September as a "ballpark figure", you're looking at just over 3 weeks between betas.

So, unless the next beta appears in the middle of week commencing June 27th, I've just rabbled on a complete load of nonsense, lol.

As many as it takes before they get it right for the general public, their is no specific number.

In general they take 4 betas. As far as I know, iOS4 had 5 as there was a problem with the GM so they had released another GM before final. Am I right or was I just dreaming?

That was iOS 4.2 that had 2 gm builds. Thing is, after the 4th beta it could be near a month before it comes out. Beta schedule are fairly regular but beta to GM is not.
