iPod touch iOs 5 terminal problems

Hi I'm new to these forums but I'm desperate and need help. I just got an iPod 4g 8gig with ios 5. I have managed to jailbreak it with no problems and was able to download a few Apps through installous. But now I'm faced with a dilemma where when I try to download any app it tells me that it failed to download because it wasn't able to save the file. I did some research and found that I need to set a folder permission to 777 instead of 755. I was trying to do this through terminal but when I type in ssh root@myip it times out. I'm quite confused and right now have no direction. I would just ssh through my pc but I have no Internet right now to download any type of program. If anyone could elaborate I would greatly appreciate it.
