So as we've HEARD a iphone 5 is unlikely going to happen. Does this open the door for Apple to charge for its software updates? maybe compensate its IPhone hardware revenue with software revenue?

Discuss!

Hello?

It's Apple

You're gonna pay one way or the other.

Apple tax is everywhere, cleverly hidden in the case of iOS.

But make no mistake, if it's an Apple product you're paying Apple Tax no matter how much people deny it. :)

apple snapple the OP is suggesting that the iOS update will be a paid app, in Canada we have "free health care" but obviously its our taxes the pay for it so its not FREE, now back on topic do you think the update will be a "paid" app

I heard there was a law that prohibited them from charging for updates on iPhones in use, but it was okay to charge for iPod touches and iPads.

I'm sure an iPhone 5 will be released. The rumor is that one won't be released at WWDC. I fail to see how this is in any way correlated to the release plans for iOS 5.

I've heard that people who have no idea what they're talking about will stop starting threads in here...but don't hold your breath. Also OP you seem to be implying that the iPhone 4 will be the last phone Apple will make....care to comment on that?

First, it is only a rumor that the next iPhone won't be out until 2012. And even if it does come out next year, that doesn't mean that Apple will start charging for iOS updates.

IIRC Steve Jobs (or someone during one of the announcements said), the reason why people were being charged for updates on the iPod was because they don't pay a monthly service fee like iPhone users.

he said updates for the iPhone will always be free because we pay per month.

something like that.

therefore, NO it will not cost money.

How do people come up with this stuff? Has Apple ever charged for updates? Imagine how many people that would tick off.

The iPod Touch and iPhones will both get the free iOS 5 upgrade. The iPad 1G is the only iDevice that may have to pay for it. If you are to read the EULA and/or the TOS you'll see that Apple will provide the next major iOS upgrade for free, but may pay for the next one.
