iOS 6 iMessage issue

Whenever I send iPhone users a message, it sends as a text initially. Then when they respond its in a different conversation as an iMessage.
Anyone else have this issue?

Yes, it's been bugging me since I first noticed it last night.

Give your phone a second to query the number... when I start composing a text, when I put the recipient's number in it starts as an SMS (green) and then changes to iMessage (blue) after a moment.

When I text non iPhone users, their response is in a different conversation. 4 times out of 5 this happens. Opening my SMS app shows doubles of my friends names...
