iOS 7 - iPod Nano-Style Icons?

Just noticed this today. Look at these app icons from the latest iPod nano, then compare them to the equivalent iOS app icons. I'm not talking about the shape, just how everything is so much simpler, cleaner, less skeuomorphism -- along the lines of what Ive seems to be promising.

What do you think, could this be a taste of what is yet to come?
 
No, those are pretty old style, it isn't flat at all. They only used those circle buttons because it made for a better interface on a small device like that. It will probably be updated and tweaked for iOS 7 even.

This is more what iOS 7 will be:

I doubt it, because then iOS developers will have to change their App icons. On the nano, there are no 3rd parties to worry about.
 
Too Glossy looking to be iOS7. But i'm curious on how apple will pull of the "flat" look and not end up looking like windows 8 in some sense.
 
I think the home screen icons will look like the icons shown here on the new passbook card...perhaps brighter, definitely with rounded edges, but probably not neon like the WWDC icon....although neon might look good too. Simple, "flat" and modern. Plus new fonts throughout all of iOS 7, similar to some of the many "flat" apps now appearing in the App Store (eg. Currency, Clever Clues, Timers - sorry, I haven't put links)

Absolutely not.

The glossy squares are already outdated and tacky, why on earth would they make them glossy circles? :eek:

If anything, they'll be matte icons (See: Pandora icon, Google icon, SmartGlass icon, Digg icon, etc), at least I hope they will ;)

I think that was her point. That they aren't going to change. And I suspect that to be true. Lose some gradient shadowing of backgrounds perhaps but otherwise they won't be doing a large mixing up of things on the icon front. If only for ease of use from those that are used to the icons being certain ones.

We're just comparing the two examples.

Even those examples aren't totally flat, they still have faux textures and drop shadows. But we don't know how flat I've is thinking. If it's totally flat, then even those icons will change, but I kind of wonder iOS 7 really goes full flat.

Uh... Sorry, but that's ridiculous. Those icons are filled with skeuomorphism. No one who has a grasp of Ive's stance against skeuomorphism would suggest the iOS 7 icons will have a wood texture, or look like real life paper tickets within a fold, or anything remotely similar to that. If anything, even though a flat design is what we will probably see, it's more likely we would get a design with some gloss as seen in the OP than a design filled with skeuomorphism such as those.

Whether you like it or not, skeuomorphism is what makes iOS great. At least for app icons. You cannot apply minimal design to everything, and you have to remember that this OS is designed for everyone - You, me, our parents, our grandparents, our siblings, and small children.

It would be ridiculous for them to come up with something completely new when there's already a design standard that's being hit by most iOS developers already.

No, not skeuomorphism per se, but good design. I'm sorry but there's nothing good about the design of Game Center or the notes app. Some argue find my friends is OK because the faux leather and stiching don't impede the functionality of the app. So what? Just because something functions doesn't mean it has to look ugly. What does faux leather have to do with finding people?

Also, how many developers are using the default iOS UI kit? My guess is not many as a lot of apps in the App Store are much better designed than Apple's apps. I'm sure developers will happily adjust.

After listening to recent podcasts from John Gruber and 9to5Mac I suspect there will be big changes. According to Mark Gurman, after Forstall was let go they basically scrapped iOS 7 work to date and started fresh. And he tweeted that there's more stuff (i.e not just cosmetic changes) that hasn't leaked yet.

Also John Gruber claims employees with carry privileges are required to have a filter on their phone screen which is something they haven't had to do in the past.

Now maybe all these bloggers are full of it and the rumors are bunk but it seems to me if that was the case we'd hear contradicting rumors. Or someone like Jim Dalrymple would have thrown out a "nope" to the Bloomberg/WSJ stories. All we got from him was a "yep" that iOS would be ready to show at WWDC.
 
No that's not flat, think more like the new Google Now app on the App Store. That's where I think Apple is going.
