Since upgrading I have been getting much faster downstream speeds in the Washington DC market in which I live. We have had verizon AWS spectrum for quite some time
But since upgrading to 8.4 I have been getting speeds upwards of 70mbps during the middle of the day which used to be unheard of unless I was doing a speeded in the middle of the night when no one was using the base station. I noticed the carrier version got bumped to 19.6 from version 19.0 in the gm of iOS 8.3.

Has anyone else noticed these improvements in a market where Verizon has both let and xlte(AWS)?!

Your tower got upgraded. It might just be that coincidence.

They have been upgrading many base stations to AWS but that began to happen around July of last year. These speed increases seem to be prevalent everywhere in this market.

I believe the implication there is that with the 8.4 beta the Verizon carrier version it comes with is 19.6.

I'm with T-Mobile and 8.4 Beta 2 shows 19.6 carrier. Sadly the beta is a mess and I am going back to 8.3 but will sacrifice the carrier update for stability and usability

8.4 beta 2 has rogers at 19.6 as well, theres a speed increase. going back to 8.3 theres a speed drop with rogers 19.0, its repeatable.

thats no tower upgrade
