iOS 8 GM mail not checked in the background

It appears email is NOT being checked in the background and I have to manually go into the app and refresh the contents.

I have checked the notification center and verified that the accounts have notifications and I also verified that the email is push.

All of my accounts are google app accounts using exchange. Does anyone have any workarounds?

I am using IOS 8 on iPhone 4s.

restarting the phone did the trick
