Today at its special event, Apple has announced that iOS 8 would be released on September 17 as a free download, just two days before the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus release.

Great to hear! Looking forward to all the new features.

I wonder if this will turn on Verizon voLTE in the iPhone 5s.

This is probably one of the most exciting keynote!!

Great presentation apple!!

Don't know why, but I'm pretty shocked it's being released so late. Was half expecting them to announce it was available later today... help get people excited and get things moving, and make impacts on Apple's end a bit less crazy so close to the 6's release with all the traffic they'll be getting for preorders and activations.

I hope they don't drag their feet much more on Yosemite too. Hopefully by fall they are not meaning October or November. Not to mention, since the most important/looked forward to features of iOS 8 require OS X Yosemite, not a whole hell of a lot of point to separating them regarding release.

Would have been nice if I was able to watch it. Constant crashing, chinese translator, TV Truck screen, more crashing, skipping backwards half an hour. I didn't get to see most of it.

Interesting, I wonder if I could use VoLTE on my iphone 5 on T-Mobile, any change ios 8 will officially come out early?

What about the iPad 3? Apple yours screwed up big time!

I thought the official name of the iPad 3 is the iPad with Retina Display..... Or is it the iPad 4.....

I guess this will be an indication it may be time to get the new iPad once released and get rid of my iPad 3.

EDIT: Other web sites and articles are basically saying that the iPad with Retina Display is what apple lumps both the iPad 3 & iPad 4 into. It should get this next update. (My guess would be this will be the last major iOS upgrade for the iPad 3 however.)

The iPad 3 was sort of an odd duck anyway. It was as if they didn't expect the 4 to be finished, so they rushed out their backup plan.

As for the iPad 2, this is likely the last update it will see. I still think that was, at least in terms of fit and finish, the best iPad.

Yes, I realized after the iPad 3 is getting the update. I just didn't want the 2 to get one and not the 3. It's posted on apples website that iPad 2,3,4, are all getting it
Thanks

I've ( independent dev ) have had iOS8 for so long I forgot that it wasn't even GM yet! Haha! After the initial memory leaks were fixed for the iPad, iOS8 has been very tight.

Every night when I jump into bed I speak to Siri: "Hey Siri, set my alarm for 5:15 am". Siri takes care of the rest.

I think you'll really like it.

At Apple, releasing something too early gets you fired. At Google, they make you a VP then kill the product.
