I just read this article about the adoption rate of iOS 8 being rather slow compared to iOS 7...hmm maybe because it's still not available for people to download. It's been out for a full day in 1 hour and nothing. My phone just says "Checking for Update..." and stays there. When I plug it in, it says iOS 7.0.4 is available. Idk how people already have it if it won't even show up for me.

Over The Air updates are Delta updates. So you need to have the latest version to get them. You're missing iOS 7.1.2

For you to update you need to plug your phone into iTunes on your MacBook at this point and have iTunes install 8 for you.

iPhone 5 not jailbroken. Says iOS 7.0.4 update available, not iOS 8. And I've never once needed to update to a primitive update just to get a brand new one so idk what's going on here.

Update to 7.0.4 and then see what it says next. iOS 8 may require a certain version before updating such as at least 7.1.0

Do NOT do this. Apple no longer sign 7.0.4.

Either update to 7.1.2 or use the direct download link above and update to iOS 8.

Not true. I was only running 7.1 on my 5S and was able to update OTA. I shut down my phone and powered it back up again to get the "check for updates" to refresh and iOS 8 appeared.

You're running 7.1.x you can update OTA to 8. (x) is a hot fix to 7.1. In order for Delta upgrades to work you must be running a current version. 7.0 is not a current version. He is being offered 7.0.4 which means he has never updated his phone or only updated it once since the launch of 7 last year.

He can run the OTA updates until it offers 8.0 or he can download and install 8 from iTunes.

Any idea why he is being offered 7.0.4 and not 7.1 then? Sounds like with what you said, if he has any version of 7.0 he should be offered 7.1 following that logic.

Do you have enough room on your device to download OTA update? Perhaps you don't have the space for 7.1 or 8, why you are still offered 7.0.4 which is already cached on the device and ready for installation.
