Even easier way. Put your phone in DFU mode, (power off device, plug into pc usb, hold home button down until you see apple logo and lighting cable) Go to itunes and choose update. keeps all your settings and downloads and installs IOS 9. I had 9.1 beta on mine and this worked perfect.

Or just download the 9 gm and then do shift update in iTunes.

When you go into DFU mode as soon as it connects it asks if you want to update or restore. Click update and IOS 9 automatically downloads and installs. No downloading before hand needed. Plus this leaves your settings and apps as they are. If you get the 9gm and do shift update. You have to restore also, if i recall correctly.
Works great from going from 9.1 beta back to 9 public release.

Oh well. I restored to 8.4 and then upgraded to 9.0. The restore process took hours as I set up as new and re-downloaded most of my apps.

You don't have to restore, it just updates the device and it's as it was before.

Ditto. Just did the same thing.

I never knew this was so simple and already known. I was under the impression you could only restore back to iOS 9 not update to it?

Sequence:
  • Download iOS 9 GM for your device (see links above)
  • delete beta profile
  • on your device - iCloud disable Find my iphone/pad
  • connect device via USB
  • Then goto iTunes - option click " check for update"
  • point to downloaded firmware file and install
  • check software update on iOS device - should say you are on latest version

It won't if you downloaded the GM, the Public Release version isn't the same as the GM this time.

If you follow your instructions there is an additional step of downloading and installing iOS 9 PR at the end.

Of course, if you just download and install iOS 9 PR in the first place you won't have to update twice...
