What a shame! Apple ID randomly kicks the sim phone number off the association with Apple ID, rendering iMessage and FaceTime uncontactable for hours.

Luckily, discovered this 12 hours later, when I got a call from an angry client complaining they had been trying to iMessage me and it wasn't going through.

My client uses their iPad on wifi to work with me.

I check the phone number in my iOS settings under "iMessage", the cell number is still there and has a tick, but I click on the cell number and it shows a spinning wait icon for half a second.

And then I get an email from Apple: "Your Apple ID information has been updated...phone number". I have to reassure my client I did not have my phone off.

Thanks Apple for making life harder for my client, and for making me look unprofessional, again.

Such a terrible company. Slipping so badly. If my clients didn't all use Apple, I would switch to Android or a better service. Such rubbish.

Apple is bad, but Android is not necessarily better. It seems that luck is often involved.

Also in your case, I wonder if the issue is with the phone carrier, or if you have somehow eliminated that possibility.

Yeah it could be the carrier, but it should have an alert that my number is disassociated with my account and it is switching to a different Apple ID identifier. For it to do this without my knowledge, is very poor process layout.
