I'm trying to understand how the new Finder-based sync works, before I try it, as all my music and iPhone syncing is still being handled by an old iTunes-era system, and I haven't migrated it to my new machine.

When Finder on newer macOS versions does a device sync, where is it getting the information for syncing artists, playlists etc from? Do you have to migrate your audio library into the Music.app first so that the system is aware of it, or does Finder prompt you to point to a .itl library or similar when you first conect the iPhone?
