When I doublepress the home button and the multitasking drawer opens up, it appears to be empty. I can tell this is a problem because when i use SBSettings and check the running processes, I see many apps are still running. At the very least i should see iPod controls in the drawer.

This wasnt always the case, I know that right when i finished jailbreaking (before i synced all my apps over iTunes) i did see iPod controls and SMS in the drawer (those were the only 2 apps i tried before doing that initial sync). I then synced over any apps i had but failed to install anything that was from Installous (depending on AppSync). That was expected. I THINK (not sure really) that when the official apps loaded i was still able to have apps appear in the multitasking drawer. I think installed AptBackup from Cydia and tried to restore all. I manually chose Installous and AppSync 4.0 from Cydia because I noticed that they didnt install after the restore all. I then synced again with iTunes. Now I got all my Installous apps back on the phone. This is when i checked the multitasking drawer again and i didnt have any icons!

So I am going to assume its one of the Cydia packages thats giving me this issue. I was hoping someone here might have a clue as to which package might cause this. I got a list of all my packages I am sharing below:

EDIT: I just noticed that the package for appsync31 looks like its still installed which is probably a bad thing. when i go through cydia it is NOT installed, this is the output of dpkg so i trust that this is accurate. any idea of how to remove that package without cydia?

EDIT 2: Now I'm not really sure what is going on with that package, I am trying to use dpkg to remove it but this is what i get when i try to find out the status of that package
Code:
**********-iPhone:~ root# dpkg -s us.hackulo.appsync31
Package: us.hackulo.appsync31
Status: install ok not-installed

I'm having the same exact problem. I never checked multitasking before I jailbroke though. My iBooks doesn't work either. I'm using a 3GS.

Same problem here, all worked initially after jb but now the drawer is empty, not even ipod controls and orientation is showing.

iBooks never worked from the start after jb.

hey guys....

thought i would help you guys out.....turns out that the reason the multitasking is not working is because of Winterboard.....Remove winterboard and everything will work fine.....

Secondly as far as the ibooks is concerned.....the iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of the Pwnage Tool which fixes the ibooks issue.

Hope that helps....

Correct on both counts. I removed Winterboard and multitasking worked. I recreated a ipsw package with PwnageTool 4.0.1 and iBooks works now too!

I jailbroke my 3GS 2 days ago with Sn0wbreeze to iOS 4.0. Not knowing the new features of the iOS 4, I finally realized multitasking is not working yesterday, and probably never worked to begin with. I searched for solutions online and it seemed like Winterboard might have been an issue when iOS 4 was first released, but an update of Winterboard was released back in June to fix the problem. Since I didn't jailbreak until 2 days ago, and verifying the version installed, I already have the newest Winterboard, but am still having the same issue. I tried disabling the themes I was using to no avail. When I double-click the home button from the home screen, it slides up with an empty drawer with no icons, just completely blank. When I double-click the home button within an app that supports multitasking, nothing happens. What else could it be that's causing this problem? It would be awesome to finally be able to multitask without using backgrounder.

Here is a list of jailbroken apps on my phone:
Activator
biteSMS
BossPaper
Categories
Five Icon Dock
FontSwap
GV Mobile
Insomnia
MxTube
OpenSSH
Rotation Inhibitor
SBSettings
WebViewController
WinterBoard
Rock App

THEMES:
Suave
Twilight Theme

ADD ONS:
Autolock SBSettings
Insomnia Toggle
Push Mail SBSettings Toggle
Vibrate Toggle SBSettings

Please help, thanks a million!

If I were you I'd first go through all those apps and see if they were iOS 4 compatible. Otherwise it'd have to be process of elimination

So I checked my list of apps against this list, and the only thing is biteSMS doesn't have multitasking support, and BossPaper's support columns are blank. Could biteSMS be the problem? It doesn't say the app isn't compatible with iOS 4, just that it doesn't support multitasking. Does that mean if I have biteSMS installed my multitasking wouldn't work? Thanks again.

A quick google shows BossPaper isn't iOS 4 compatible and in fact has the very effect you mentioned of breaking the multitasking bar. Remove it.

Thanks for your help, I found a workaround here that allows me to keep BossPaper while still be able to use the multitask tray. :)

a co worker of mine had the same problem this morning i removed bosspaper form her phone and it fixed the issue
