I hope this is in the right place - brand new here.
I got a new MacBook Pro recently and it's swell except I sometimes have trouble connecting to the Internet. My university's wifi (no password) works fine, but a friend's router with a password doesn't. I try to connect, it gives me full bars after I enter the password, and then it shuts down. First it tells me I have no IP address, then it tells gives me one but tells me it's self-assigned so it won't work. At no point does the Internet work; another friend has exactly the same laptop as me and hers has had no problems whatsoever with this network.
On top of that, my ethernet isn't always good. Sometimes I have to plug it in, take it out, and plug it in again over and over to get it to connect. After that I have no problems. Recently I checked Network Prefs and it gave me an IP error message for Ethernet as well. As a side note, earlier today a message appeared saying that someone else was using my IP at the same time - don't know if that's related? That's the first time that's happened but the internet issues have been around since I got here.
Could anyone help me? Just as a note, I'm not super familiar with the workings of the network setups, so I might need a little more detail than normal. Thanks so much.
