iP4 - How to put Bookmark onto Desktop?

Recently purchased an iPhone 4 (my 1st smartphone).
I want to "love" it ..., but there's a ton to learn, and searching the help guides can take forever ..., and still not find what I'm looking for.

When I want a map location - I've always used Google on my puters.
On my iP4 ~ the Google thumbnail is right on the desktop. Touch, type, & go.

I'd like to try using "Maps."
Can I - How do I, put its icon / thumbnail onto the desktop ~ so I can begin to learn how to use it faster?
