IP4 Unlock question

I am living in Japan, but I have just used my families upgrade in America to get an IP4. Phone came off backorder and will arrive at my families house in America tomorrow. My question is as follows, I know the IP4 bought in America is region locked to AT&T. Is it possible that if my family member activates the phone with their SIM and send me the phone I will be able to place my Softbank SIM in the phone and use it. There will be an unlock released shortly just wait for a bit longer. Follow musclenerd and planetbieng on twitter for news on the unlock. Don't go on that site they are scams and can't unlock your phone.

Thanks for the info. So does anyone know if an iPhone bought in the US is "carrier-agnostic" (unlocked) before inserting the AT&T sim. Like has anyone bought an iPhone in the US and installed their own SIM from another carrier right out of the box?
