After a bit of detective work I've now realised that for some reason every time I open my words with friends paid app I'm getting charged for data at home when I should be falling under wifi useage. I don't use push notifications for this app and I make sure that the wifi symbol is displayed before opening the app yet I'm still being charged.

Have any other players noticed this ?

It's entirely possible that it was written to always use cellular data instead of "current connection". Also, I've come to the conclusion that the "wifi bars" means your phone has gotten an IP address, nothing more. Make sure there's data actually moving via wifi.
