I was updating from 7.1 and had no problems updating through OTA previously.
So the recovery screen showed up and I was speechless... luckily I had it synced yesterday so not much was lost...

This occurred on my 5 since updating to iOS 7. 7.0.1 and 7.0.2 caused this to happen. Went to the Genius Bar and replaced the phone. No problems since.

I'm restoring now. Not a huge deal since I synced right before, just takes a long time of waiting for it to restore my whole backup.

As much as its tempting to update OTA, I now (always) plug in all my iOS devices to my Mac and update via iTunes. That way I have a full clean backup after the update.

yeah, probably not as safe on the Windows side. Anyway I do OTA but always make sure I sync beforehand

This. I've had a bad experience (or two) from doing an OTA and only use my MacBook w/ iTunes now.
